Bridgwater Waste to Energy Plant (WTE) – Bridgwater, Showground Distribution Park, Somerset

PROJECT
The Bridgwater Waste to Energy (WTE) facility will process approximately 100,000 tonnes of commercial and municipal refuse-derived fuel (“RDF”) per annum, which would otherwise have been committed to landfill. The plant produces around 9.5 MWe, enough to power approximately 20,000 homes.

CHALLEGES
The building is constructed with a steel frame and generates energy by burning fuel, resulting in very high temperatures within the building.

SOLUTIONS
IDF has utilised CFD and structural modeling to provide fire protection design for the project. Given the high number of structural steel elements in the building, IDF opted for a cost-effective solution by using a lightweight gypsum-based render for the structure’s fire protection. This approach ensures the safety of the plant while maintaining an economic advantage.
